Glyphosate is not carcinogenic. The Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) comes to this conclusion based on the available scientific evidence. The new RAC opinion is in line with the proposal of the four Member States in charge of the re-evaluation of glyphosate and with ECHA's previous opinion from 2017.
RAC concluded that the current classifications for glyphosate do not need to be changed. The Committee notes that the substance does not meet the criteria to classify it as a carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic substance. Glyphosate can cause serious eye damage and is toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. The committee has assessed the properties of glyphosate against the criteria laid down in the Classification, Labeling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation. They based this on the extensive scientific file that has been built up on glyphosate and on the hundreds of comments received by the body during the consultations.
Step when renewing the admission
The opinion will be published on ECHA's website in mid-August and sent to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EFSA is expected to complete its risk assessment of glyphosate in July 2023. Subsequently, the European Commission will analyze EFSA's conclusions and the renewal assessment report prepared by Sweden, France, Hungary and the Netherlands. The Commission will then submit an extension report and a draft regulation to Member States on whether or not the approval of glyphosate can be renewed.
