Tough trade in organic potatoes and onions

June 2, 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The harvest of new organic Dutch potatoes has started cautiously. The onion harvest will take a little longer, but it is not far away either. This can be seen in the trade in organic potatoes and onions from storage. The mood was already depressed and it certainly hasn't improved.

Quickly find a buyer for what is still in the shed. According to traders, that is the motto among growers. However, buyers are not inclined to take large positions now. It also does not help that the demand for organic products is moderate, as has been the case for some time. The effect of the disappointing demand on the price was limited for a long time, but according to insiders, the mood has now turned.

The trade in organic onions is running smoothly. Many free onions are no longer in storage. It is only difficult for those growers to find a buyer. Many sorters have sufficient work stock to meet the stipulated obligations. Free trade relies mainly on exports, and prices are under pressure for exports to Poland, for example. The DCA Indication Price has taken a big step back this week to €25 to €35 per 100 kilos for both coarse and fine grades.

There is also a search for a buyer for organic potatoes. There are still good batches of potatoes, but there is little interest in them from the market. "You really have to pull it to get the trade done," according to one trader. The shelf life of the potatoes is becoming a major problem. The dormancy is the big stumbling block. Potatoes that look good during loading and sorting will start sprouting after just a few days on the supermarket shelf. The DCA Indication Price for good potatoes this week amounts to €50 to €55 per 100 kilos for both waxy and floury. But with the caveat that there is very little trade.
