Organic potato and onion market continues to decline

June 9, 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The trade in organic potatoes and onions from the 2021 harvest is almost over. And that is noticeable in the market. It wasn't busy anymore and it is getting quieter. That does not mean that all barns are empty.

Saying goodbye to the potatoes and onions quickly has been the motto among growers for a few weeks now. That sentiment is only getting stronger. The first new potatoes from the Netherlands are already on the market and the onions are not long in coming. The demand for potatoes and onions from the old crop is moderate at the moment. The downward trend in prices that started last week will therefore continue this week.

The trade in organic potatoes is difficult. According to some traders, good potatoes can still be obtained from storage. However, buyers are hardly interested in the old harvest anymore. "Some growers took the gamble that there would still be a gap between the old and new harvest," said a trader. "That group is now wrong. With the current weather, the tons are growing very quickly." Phytophthora can still be a major bummer, some insiders warn. It is still early in the season, but last year, after a few dry summers, we once again saw how the fungus can thrive in a growing season. The DCA Indication Price for organic potatoes from storage this week amounts to €45 to €52 per 100 kilos.

The trade in organic onions is also difficult. There are not even many good free onions left, but if the demand is not there then everything is too much, is a frequently heard comment this week. Quality is a point of concern according to insiders. Various parties are starting to run out and retail can no longer lose those onions. There is very little free trade in onions at the moment. Most sorters have enough onions for the fixed obligations and do not buy more. The export has to lead the way on the organic onion market and there the demand is calm. This puts further pressure on the price. The DCA Indication Price this week amounts to €20 to €25 per 100 kilos.

Due to the lack of transactions, these are the last DCA Indication Prices for organic arable products this season.
