The trade in organic onions and carrots is slowly getting going. The trade in onions in particular is starting to take off. It is very quiet on the potato market for the time being. The mood on the organic market is moderately positive. Prices for the conventional products are at a very decent level, which puts them well below the organic products.
According to traders, growers are generally quite realistic with the prices they ask. For organic, the prices are reasonable, but not great. According to some insiders, there is relatively much interest in delivering early this season. Storage costs have risen sharply, mainly due to high energy prices. In addition, the grower runs a risk with the product as long as it is in the shed, money invested in the cultivation is only released after sale. What also plays a role in that decision is that keeping last season for a long time was not or barely extra rewarded. The course of the previous season, of course, says nothing about the new season, but it is still noticeable that this is still on the mind and growers do not want to make the same mistake as last year.
Early start in the onions
The onion season started relatively early this year. The sorters are currently operating on onion sets. Onion sets are still fairly easy to get, but there is certainly no oversupply. The market is also reasonably balanced, according to traders. The seed onions are ripening quickly. The yields are not great this season, but certainly not bad either. The onions grew easily, especially in the beginning, and the disease pressure has been fairly low so far. That has changed somewhat due to the rainfall of the last few days. The DCA Indication Price starts this season at €25 to €35 per 100 kilos for both fine and coarse grades. The prices for conventional onions form a hard floor in the market.
The carrot trade is starting a bit more slowly, but the first free plots of this have also been cleared. As with the onions, the yields are fairly average. Compared to last year, when the yields were very good, less carrots are harvested per hectare. According to some insiders, the acreage for carrots is also somewhat smaller than last year. The quality of the former carrots is generally good. The DCA Indication Price for carrots this week is €30 to €35 per 100 kilos.
There is no DCA Indication Price for potatoes this week because there are too few transactions.
