The German sugar manufacturer Nordzucker assumes that the beet harvest this season will be smaller than a year earlier. The drought in Europe is the main cause of this, the company announced before the start of the campaign, which starts on September 3.
The sugar content in the beets is higher than last year, but the total harvest is slightly lower, according to Nordzucker. The extent to which the drought has wreaked havoc varies considerably from area to area. As a result, there are also large differences between the beet yields. Nordzucker has factories in Germany, Poland, Denmark and Sweden, among others. The campaign is expected to run until the end of January.
Energy
In recent years, Nordzucker has converted several plants to natural gas, partly to meet the CO2 reduction targets. "Due to the uncertainty in the gas market - where possible and necessary - factories have again been converted to oil," writes COO Alexander Godow in the message. "We started this at the end of February. This way we can be sure of the supply of locally produced sugar for our customers. Nordzucker also helps to make room in the tight gas market."
