Crop tour Weather - Week 37

Precipitation in the south slows the harvest of potatoes and onions

16 September 2022 - Robin de Winter

It has rained a lot in the south of the Netherlands in recent weeks. In this region, as much as 100 millimeters fell in a week, which means that growers participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour have to wait before harvesting the chips potatoes that go into storage.

At Kees Trouw, it has rained 160 millimeters on his plots in and around Hellevoetsluis (ZH) since the beginning of last week. He planned to clear his crop tour plot last week, but had to postpone it. This weekend 40 millimeters is expected near Hellevoetsluis, but Trouw hopes to be able to start harvesting after the weekend. The rain fell heavily in the vicinity of his company. Other growers had only had 70 millimeters of rainfall on their plots, a few kilometers from the Trouw company. They are busy harvesting potatoes. In addition to the potatoes, 20% of the onions are also fixed.

Waiting for better weather
Daan Goense from Driewegen (Zeeland) is also waiting for better weather before he starts harvesting potatoes. About 100 millimeters of precipitation has fallen on his plots since last Monday. Before the rain, there were many growers near Goense who drove the onions and early potatoes inside. Goense has two plots of potatoes that are suitable for harvesting and is aiming for the Innovator to be harvested at the end of next week.

Kees Vrolijk from Fijnaart (NB) had 90 millimeters of precipitation on his plots last week. Together with the 19 millimeters of the day before yesterday and yesterday, this results in a soil that is too wet to start grubbing. He has sprayed 40 of the 140 hectares and wants to start harvesting next week - as soon as possible. Also at Vrolijk, it will rain around 30 millimeters next weekend. Near him, around 25% of the onion plots are still fixed or still on the land.
