Biomarket players hold cards to their chests

15 September 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The mood on the market for organic potatoes, carrots and onions is cautiously positive. Still, the market is characterized by relatively little trading at the moment. Growers and traders, especially with potatoes and onions, look at each other and don't dare to give a blow.

In organic potato cultivation, earlier varieties are often used because of the generally lower phytophthora pressure. This relatively early cultivation has had a positive effect on yields later in the season due to the drought. In some regions the drought has cut yields harder than in others, but on average the yields don't seem to be disappointing.

In the trade of organic potatoes it has actually been very quiet all season. That will not change this week. Due to the limited number of transactions, it is difficult to arrive at a good price indication. Some of the growers think the current prices are too low, they stick to prices around or just below €50 per 100 kilos. However, the trade is hardly willing to go along with that and does not want to go much above $40. That makes the market pretty stuck at the moment. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week at €40 to €45 per 100 kilos for both solid boiling and floury potatoes.

Waiting who bites first
The trade in onions is also somewhat calmer at the moment. The landing period is largely over. However, the last batches still have to find a new owner. Growers and traders now have to wait for each other and see who bites first. The DCA Indication Price remains stable at €30 to €35 per 100 kilos for both coarse and fine grades.

There is a healthy demand for organic carrots for direct delivery. However, this does not give growers an entirely positive feeling. This is because the yields of early carrots are generally not that easy. The DCA Indication Price for organic carrots remains the same as last week at €38 to €43 per 100 kilos.
