Confidence is growing little by little in the market for organic potatoes, carrots and onions. This is not immediately apparent from the quotations. In terms of trade, not much is happening in potatoes and onions. There is more to experience at the carrot market.
Organic farmers are generally quite realistic in the market, traders say. Last year it was expected that there was considerable room for higher prices later in the season. That was ultimately disappointing and that is still fresh in the memory. This season it seems that farmers are just a bit more realistic in what they ask and are less high in the tree in terms of price.
Good carrot in the size for immediate delivery is requested. The early varieties have been cleared and the market is clean. Demand for carrots is good in the meantime, while the later varieties have not yet grown everywhere. That brings life to the market. Rinsers and merchants have to get the farmer on the carrot.
The costs of storing carrots have risen sharply compared to recent years. In combination with a relatively good ex-land price, this makes it tempting to sell the carrot in the fall. An insider warns to harvest the carrot on time. Waiting too long will not improve the quality. The DCA Indication Price has risen this week and amounts to €41 to €45 per 100 kilos for carrots that are delivered immediately.
Calm times
In the onion trade it is a bit quieter compared to a few weeks ago. Most of the onions are in the shed and the onions that are still in the swath are for the most part forgiven. Growers are not yet very interested in delivery from the shed. The DCA indication price for onions remains the same at €30 to €35 per 100 kilos. Most trades are at the lower end of the quote.
The market for organic potatoes remains difficult to interpret. Traders and growers are cautiously optimistic. "We will probably not achieve a record price this season, but if you have harvested a bit decently, you can achieve a nice balance if things go well in the coming period," according to an insider.
There are just very few transactions. An important buyer such as Germany, for example, is hardly on the market, which makes Dutch trade hesitant. The need to buy is missing. On the other hand, growers are also in no rush to sell. That keeps the market pretty balanced. The DCA Indication Price remains unchanged at €40 €45 per 100 kilos.
