Confidence in the organic market does not yet lead to trade

29 September 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

There is confidence in the market for organic potatoes, carrots and onions. That just doesn't lead to much trade. Especially with the potatoes and onions it is very quiet. Only in the carrot trade is quite a lot happening at the moment.

The onion trade is fairly quiet. Both growers and traders do not feel the need to do business at the moment. This is partly because the demand from the end users does not survive. The usual work continues, but there are no outliers that make the market mood. The yield of onions in the Netherlands varies, but in general seems average. In Germany, the harvest is not easy, according to insiders. That offers opportunities for later in the season. The DCA Indication Price has increased this week and amounts to €30 to €38 per 100 kilos for both the coarse and fine grades.

Few potato transactions
It remains difficult to paint a realistic picture of the potato market. In itself, trade and growers are quite positive, but there are very few transactions. This has been going on for some time, but it is difficult to put your finger on what exactly is causing this. The changing diet of consumers may have something to do with this. The boiled potato is less often on the menu and instead, for example, more fries or ready-to-eat potato slices are eaten. The DCA Indication Price for organic potatoes remains the same at €40 to €45 per 100 kilos.

Organic carrots are in high demand. There is no shortage of good carrots in the right size for immediate delivery and that sets the mood on the market. Some growers with the later varieties are a bit hesitant about what to do with the storage carrot. Cooling costs are very high and ex-land prices have remained quite decent so far. Due to the limited supply of carrots, there are also opportunities further into the storage season. The DCA Indication price for organic carrots for direct delivery has increased to €43 to €47 per 100 kilos.
