Growers' confidence in organic market is growing

6 October 2022 - Jesse Torringa

The mood on the organic markets is mainly calm, but confidence in the trade and especially the grower seems to have grown. This is especially the case with onions. Carrots are still in high demand and potatoes are again (too) quiet.

The organic onion trade is on the quiet side. The usual work continues, but as in previous weeks, there are no impulses that bring mood to the market. However, there is confidence in the farmers. This is because fewer kilos have passed through the harvesting mats than previously thought. In addition, the smaller cultivation area is also a factor that plays a role, and the common market ensures a strong soil. The revenues are also lower abroad, but that does not yet lead to more transactions. In addition, farmers are not in a hurry to sell. The DCA Indication Price for organic onions therefore remains the same at €32 to €38 per 100 kilos for both the coarse and fine grades.

Potato market a little more nervous
Things are still not going well for organic potatoes. Processing continues, but it is quiet at the moment. What is missed is sales to Germany. Previously, a considerable volume was exported, but in recent years the Germans have been growing more and more organic potatoes themselves. It is also known that the table potato on the Dutch plate seems less popular than it used to be. This makes the farmer seem a bit more nervous, yet many farmers are still in no rush to sell. The traders and farmers are certainly not in a negative mood. There is confidence in the market - partly in view of the yield - and many farmers just want a 5 as the first digit instead of a 4. However, the bottom of the DCA Indication price for organic potatoes drops slightly from €38 to €45 per 100 kilos, last week it was at €40.

Organic carrot remains popular
With regard to organic carrots, the market is a lot friendlier and the demand from the country is still good. So is the offer of the farmers. There is interest for the storage season, but prices are not yet given. No transactions are closed yet. This has to do with the tensions in the energy market, and also with the yields. "In the field you really see that there is clearly less yield than normal," says an insider. In addition, there is a relatively strong conventional market below that of organic carrots. This supports the market. The DCA Indication price for organic carrot direct delivery has decreased slightly and amounts to €40 to €45 per 100 kilos.
