The organic carrot and onion market seem to be getting stronger this season. This does not apply to organic potatoes, where sales are currently low and the mood is starting to get more and more nervous.
The organic onion trade continues to run smoothly, just like in previous weeks. There are always lots that are offered these days, but that certainly does not cause an overflow. There are, however, signs that there is more demand in the onion market, which is increasing confidence again. For example, export destinations are gently knocking on the door for Dutch organic onions. The mood of the grower is already largely determined by the lower yields. That situation remains unchanged, the growers see no need to sell. The DCA indication price for organic onions therefore remains the same at €32 to €38 per 100 kilos for both fine and coarse grades.
Potato market down
Just like last weeks, the organic potato market is having a much harder time. This week the market seems to provide a clearer picture. Sales are progressing steadily, but the offer, or rather the desire to sell, is increasing among the farmers. They become more nervous. The kilo price that they can catch is not wrong. Various batches are offered for a progressively lower price. This causes the market price to fall. Good and beautiful lots are also sold for a lower price than was the case before. As a result, the DCA indication price drops slightly from €37 to €43 per 100 kilos, from €38 to €45 last week. Yet the mood is not all negative. Many growers, but also the trade, are looking forward to a more positive storage season, especially when demand starts to increase.
Carrot price remains stable
Confidence in the organic carrot market appears to be highest at the moment. A lot is harvested with the comment that it is even a bit on the dry side on the heavier soils. What is also striking is that the yields are more disappointing than previously expected. "The kilos are just a little less than what you first counted on," says an insider. There are also farmers who wait a while before harvesting to save cooling costs. This now leads to slightly less supply, but the impact remains minimal. So far it has not led to a change in prices. The DCA Indicati price for organic carrots will remain the same this week at prices between €38 and €42 per 100 kilos.
