Little movement on the organic markets

20 October 2022 - Jesse Torringa

Now that the balance sheets have been drawn up, it appears that arable farmers have confidence in the organic trade. The harvests are smaller than in other years and that strengthens confidence. But entrepreneurs have not forgotten last year, when good prices were expected at the end of the storage season but ultimately did not materialize, such as for carrots and potatoes. Currently trading is quiet and there are only few transactions. At the same time, the farmer's supply is also limited.

Waiting market
The organic onion market is stable in price and is very quiet. That is not necessarily remarkable for these times, little is recorded and both the importer and the grower react expectantly. The grower also sees no need to say goodbye to his party. The price has been stable for quite some time and the spread is narrowing slightly. The DCA indicative price for organic onions this week is €30 to €33 per 100 kilos.

The trade in organic potatoes is, as in recent times, quiet. The work continues, but nothing special happens this week. Growers are less nervous than before and the supply seems to have decreased somewhat compared to previous weeks. After all, all the potatoes are behind the shelves and the growers want to keep it that way for the time being. The DCA indicative price for organic potatoes therefore remains the same at €37 to €43 per 100 kilos.

Trust remains intact
The supply of organic carrots has increased somewhat due to the harvest. On the other hand, interest in the crop is also expressed. Despite the high energy costs, growers remain confident in the storage season. The trade is also positive about the progress of the storage season. Quality could become a problem, but that is difficult to estimate for the time being. The current farm gate price is attractive and there is much less risk given the high energy costs. That makes growers doubt whether they should sell that extra load off the field or not. The DCA indicative price for organic carrots therefore remains the same at €38 to €42 per 100 kilos.
