Not busy, but secretly a lot of carrot goes away

28 October 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Relatively little demand but also not much supply. That keeps the carrot market in balance. Growers are clearly not prepared to lower the price further. Several farmers are hesitant about the high costs of storage and it remains to be seen what effect this will have on the market.

It may not be overly busy in the carrot trade, but the regular work is continuing well according to various washers. 'Secretly' serious volumes of carrots have already been lost. Perhaps that is also why growers exude a fair amount of confidence in the market. If the grower thinks the offer is too low, he dares to say no in the expectation that there will still be an opportunity to sell.

Relatively many growers say they want to sell the carrot during the off-field period because of the high storage costs. The somewhat limited supply that growers provide seems to contradict this somewhat. Some growers hope that it will take a while before frost comes and will probably take the gamble of being able to harvest until after the New Year. Another part of the growers - if the carrot market continues to perform well - could well choose to put the carrots in the refrigerator after all.

Stabilization
The DCA quotation of B-carrot remains unchanged compared to last week at an average of €16,50 per 100 kilos. The bottom of the quotation is €15 per 100 kilos and that appears to be the bottom in the market for the time being at least. The DCA quotation for C-carrot has taken a step up this week to €20 per 100 kilos. The supply of large carrots is very limited, so buyers have to open their wallets to get their hands on it.
