Organic markets are struggling due to low demand

3 November 2022 - Jesse Torringa - 2 comments

The organic markets are struggling at the moment. There is less demand than usual, which makes it very quiet. That doesn't help the prices at all. For the long term, however, there is no cause for concern.

There is little action to be seen on the organic onion market. Demand from within the country is particularly quiet. The same applies to foreign countries, which are also not interested in Dutch organic onions. There is also little supply from the farmer, so the trade is doing well with the lots that are offered. As a result, the price is holding up reasonably well. The DCA Indicative Price for organic onions is slightly down compared to last week. This amounts to an average of €30 per 100 kilos. Last week the price range was €30 to €33 per 100 kilos. Traders and growers will remain confident in the long term. There is clearly less product in both the Netherlands and Europe, which means that more exports are expected during the course of the season.

Organic carrots are declining
The demand for organic carrots continues, but demand seems to be slowing down a notch. Last week the indicative price took a step back and that is the case again this week. There is also cautiously more information about the storage season, with the increased storage costs barely covering the risk of storage. The storage season has also only just started and energy prices can – as we now know – rise rapidly. Just like with onions, carrot yields are somewhat disappointing, which gives us confidence for the long term. The DCA indicative price for organic carrots has taken a step down and this week amounts to €37 to €41 per 100 kilos.

Few
Just like with onions, things are not going well with organic potatoes. According to the trade, it is currently very quiet and that seems to continue in the near future. Exports abroad are nil, which is not surprising for this time of year. The grower also notices that it is quiet, but that does not cause worry or panic. The DCA Indication Price for organic potatoes drops slightly and this week amounts to €36 to €41 per 100 kilos.
