Expectations differ on the carrot market

11 November 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Rinsers and growers are quite different in the carrot market. The farmer generally likes it because a lot of carrots have been cleared early, while the rinser is a bit more careful and is looking at the limited demand from Eastern Europe.

A relatively large amount of carrots have already been sold early in the season, partly due to disappointing yields of the early varieties. This means that the necessary carrot is already off the market. This seems to support growers in the idea that this season will turn out well price-wise. The trade and flushers are a little less certain about this. Yes, the cards for the Dutch sector are certainly not unfavorably shuffled and the chance that the market will suddenly collapse is not considered great, but it all still has to happen. The lower yields per hectare that we had assumed for a long time now appear to be not so bad in practice. The carrot has grown rapidly in recent weeks and top yields have been reported in various places.

Opportunities
Meanwhile, exports to Eastern Europe are disappointing. Dutch carrots are too expensive according to local buyers. Just like Dutch growers, Polish and Czech farmers are also concerned about the high storage costs. In Eastern Europe there is therefore a large supply of local product and less need for carrots from other countries. This also offers opportunities for the second half of the season. Everything that is now being removed in the east will not remain hanging over the market.

The DCA quotation for b-carrot has remained unchanged compared to last week at €18 per 100 kilos. The range runs from €16 to €20, with the vast majority of trading taking place around the top of the quote. It is true that relatively little trade is done due to the quiet export. The DCA quotation for the c-peen also remains the same at €21,50 per 100 kilos.
