These are quiet times on the organic markets, but that could be very different in the second half of the season. The organic potato market in particular has prospects.
It is currently very quiet when it comes to sales of organic potatoes. Exports abroad are currently nil and the Dutch consumer is also showing slightly less interest in the organic product. That is the expectation of retailers and is currently already visible. This has everything to do with consumers who have more control over their budget since the increased prices. The same applies to other organic products.
This is currently causing some pressure on the organic potato market, but there is sufficient perspective for the storage season, according to the trade and some of the growers. This partly has to do with the export that will continue in the second part of the storage season. Given the lower yields due to the drought, more product is probably needed. However, consumers abroad can also keep an eye on their money. Another reason is the quality this season. It is currently clear that the germination process has started earlier than in other years. Those who have good lots at the end of the storage season may be able to catch more when exports start.
However, the price is currently taking a step down due to low demand and current supply. The DCA Indication Price for organic potatoes will decrease by €1 per 100 kilos this week and will amount to €35 to €39 per 100 kilos.
Organic onions competitively priced
As far as onions are concerned, it is just as busy as previous weeks. Normal work continues and the supply from the grower is minimal. Demand from abroad is calmer than normal for this time of year. Currently, supply and demand appear to be reasonably in balance and this can be seen in the DCA indication price for organic onions this week. This remains the same and amounts to an average of €30 per 100 kilos. This means that the conventional onion market is almost at the same level as the organic one.
There is more prospect for the second half of the season, but it can also go the other way, as was the case last season. At that time it was also expected that the price would increase as the storage season progressed. However, yields appear to be lower this year than in 2021.
Organic carrot
The demand for organic carrots has been considerably higher this season compared to potatoes and onions, but trade is now very quiet. The storage season is in full swing and the first transactions for carrots from storage are now being carefully made. Given the increased costs and risk, it is difficult to arrive at a correct price. This should become more clear in the near future. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week and therefore amounts to €37 to €40 per 100 kilos.
