Van de Reijt Meststoffen comes into Spanish hands

24 November 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The Spanish fertilizer producer and distributor Grupo Fertiberia is taking over the Dutch Van de Reijt Meststoffen BV. With the acquisition, Grupo Fertiberia wants to boost international sales, according to the Spanish site La Comarca de Puertollano this morning (Thursday). Van de Reijt and the Belgian subsidiary Janssens Smeets are active as wholesale companies and blenders of fertilizers in the Benelux.

Van de Reijt has bulk terminals in Moerdijk and Grobbendonk in Belgium, among others. The company's turnover last year amounted to almost €160 million. Due to the favorable location of the Van de Reijt branches, not only are customers in the Benelux easily accessible, but there are also good logistical connections with Germany. Customers in Southeast Asia can also be supplied via the efficient logistics of the port of Rotterdam.

Solid ambitions
“Van de Reijt will provide Fertiberia with a solid network in the European markets, where we notice that there is a great demand for our low-carbon solutions in plant nutrition,” said Javier Goñi, CEO of Grupo Fertiberia at La Comarca de Puertollano. The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2023 and is subject to approval by competition authorities. Once the acquisition is complete, Fertiberia will have distribution capabilities in strategic markets.

Until now, Fertiberia was mainly active in the Spanish domestic market and in France. The company wants to grow and opened a subsidiary Fertiberia Hellas last month to develop fertilizer sales in Greece and the Balkans. The company also has the ambition to produce completely CO2035 neutral by 2. To support that ambition, investment company Triton has joined Grupo Fertiberia.
