Organic carrots can take a step up again

15 December 2022 - Jesse Torringa

Organic carrots remain in demand and have taken another step upwards this week. However, carrot growers are not yet saying goodbye to their batches with these prices and want to see a 5 as the first digit. The organic seed onions are also expensive.

The demand and interest for organic onions is not yet there this season. Normally demand starts to pick up from December, but it seems that this will only change in the new year. The countries around us seem to have enough of their own product, so few organic onions currently cross the border. The work for the interior is going well and the parties that are offered are therefore given a place. Due to the high prices of conventional onions, the organic product is also improving.

The DCA indicative price for organic onions remains the same as last week and averages €40 per 100 kilos for both fine and coarse grading, delivery in December.

Peen takes quite a step up
In contrast to organic onions, the demand for carrots has been at a reasonable level for weeks. Germany plays a major role in this, the neighboring country is expressly looking for parties from the Netherlands. The growers are also willing to part with their lots, but the price will have to increase slightly for this. The difficult thing at the moment, however, is the step that needs to be taken from carrots grown on land to carrots from storage. In addition, more money simply has to be paid in connection with the storage costs and the extra work performed.

The DCA Indication Price for organic carrots will increase again this week and amounts to an average of €46 per 100 kilos. The prices are sometimes slightly lower or higher, but it is clear that the grower wants to see at least a 5 as the first number before transactions are concluded. With current market developments, it seems only a matter of time before business will be done. The growers say they have confidence in the storage season that is in full swing.

No movement in the potato market
There is currently no push for organic potatoes. Trade is slow and there is little interest from outside the Netherlands for the time being. Given the harvest in Europe and the course of other years, interest is expected for the second part of the storage season. The growers are reacting a bit more nervously to the market. This is also reflected in this week's indicative price. The DCA indicative price for organic potatoes will decrease by €1 per 100 kilos compared to last week and will amount to €32 to €37 per 100 kilos.
