Supply and demand do not meet on the carrot market

16 December 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Tough and laborious, that is how the carrot market can be described at the moment. Buyers from Eastern Europe are hardly on the market in the Netherlands because of what they consider to be too high a price, and growers with good carrots are in no hurry to sell.

The frost of the past few days has not increased the supply of carrots in the Netherlands. Most plots had already been cleared well in advance and the supply of carrots that had to be removed was therefore not too bad.

Demand from abroad for Dutch carrots is quiet. In Eastern Europe, temperatures have fallen below freezing, causing the last carrots that were still standing to be harvested. This will probably provide additional local supply so that buyers do not have to switch to foreign carrots. That may offer possibilities for later this season. With everything that is now or is going off the market in Eastern Europe, you cannot be fooled later.

Big hole
A quote that is a good reflection of the market is also difficult to put together this week. There is some supply of carrots from temporary (potato) storage and straw-covered carrots from the field, but these are large volumes and only a limited number of transactions. These form the basis for the DCA listing this week. The DCA quotation for b-carrot has taken a step up and stands at €21 per kilo. The quotation of c-peen has remained the same at €21. There is hardly any trade in good carrots from storage. There is currently too big a gap between the grower's asking price and what the flusher is willing or able to pay.
