Organic market already busy with the second half of the season

22 December 2022 - Jesse Torringa

There is absolutely no question of a spectacular end to the organic markets at the end of the year. Organic carrots and onions, however, are taking a step up, but pre-sorting is mainly done for the second half of the season.

Organic parties also benefit from the extraordinary prices paid for conventional onions. Considering the sales and interest in organic products, this is a good thing, because, just like in previous weeks, they are lagging behind other years. There has also been no interest to date, while this was on average the case in other years. This does not alter the fact that the work continues for domestic consumption. However, these are mainly the fixed agreements and contracts that were made some time ago.

The organic market is benefiting from the significant increase in conventional products. Due to the minimal number of transactions and previously made agreements, it is difficult to give an exact price indication of organic onions. It is clear that the usual price is the bottom price. The DCA indicative price for organic onions therefore increased significantly this week and averaged €43 per 100 kilos for both fine and coarse grading, delivery in December.

Carrot on its way to €50
Despite the Christmas holidays, the demand for organic carrots remains popular with our eastern neighbors. Germany continues to look for the Dutch carrot lots, but the carrot grower seems to know that too. To make storage worthwhile, they want a higher price and that may happen in the long term. This means that €50 per 100 kilos is no longer far away. The DCA Indication Price for organic carrots will increase again this week by €1 and amounts to an average of €47 per 100 kilos.

The organic potato market is a different story. The trade has not yet started this month and that does not seem likely to happen in 2022 anyway. However, the second half of the season is just around the corner and the trade certainly sees opportunities for organic potatoes. Here too, the minimum number of transactions makes it difficult to arrive at a correct indicative price. The DCA indicative price for organic potatoes remains the same this week and amounts to €32 to €37 per 100 kilos.
