The carrot market will end the year without fireworks. Growers with good carrots in the refrigerator are patiently waiting. Rinsers who do a lot in Eastern Europe notice that there is only limited demand at the moment. In itself, that also fits this week between Christmas and old and new.
There is hardly any trade in really good carrots at the moment. Growers have incurred the costs of harvesting and cooling and are now keeping the door closed in the expectation that prices will rise later this season. What comes onto the market is usually refrigerated batches that are at the bottom of class I or worse. There are also some last sheds hanging above the market. There are buyers for carrots with a spot, provided the price is right. Such defects can be sorted out. There are hardly any buyers left for sanding pears where the color has worn off.

The trade remains quite sluggish. Growers with carrots that are declining in quality want to get rid of them and are prepared to drop. For lots of carrots that fall into class I, growers quote amounts of €180 to €200 per box. That's the same as last week. For class II the price goes towards €140 per box and a kilo price is agreed for the lesser carrots. The DCA quotation for both b and c carrots remains the same as last week at €28 to €30 per 100 kilos.
