Growers remain confident in the organic market

27 January 2023 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Growers with good product have the feeling that there is more in the barrel and keep the doors closed. However, buyers be careful. There is therefore relatively little trade in organic potatoes, carrots and onions.

The onion market seems to be picking up emotionally, according to some traders. There is certainly no buying wave, but customers are more informed than a few weeks ago. The price movements on the conventional market are having a strong impact on the market for organic onions this season. The prices are so close together that a certain part of the organic onions in the conventional channel has disappeared. As a result, the organic market is clean. The idea of growers that the price can take another step in the near future is not illogical in that sense.

Traders warn that the price difference between conventional and organic should not be too great. Consumers are price conscious - this does not only apply to onions - and if the difference becomes too great, the consumer will ignore organic products. The DCA India action price for onions stands at €42 to €49 per 100 kilos.

little trade
In contrast to onions, the trade in organic carrots is somewhat calmer. For retail, the permanent work is going well for most flushers, but the industry is somewhat aloof. It is striking that German flushers can generally pay a little more than the Dutch. The DCA Indication price for carrots remains the same at €48 to €52 per 100 kilos.

The market for organic potatoes is difficult to gauge. Packers can often draw on previously established contracts and are therefore very limited in the market. What some players do notice is that a relatively old variety such as Agria is especially in demand, insofar as there is free trade. The new resistant varieties are much less popular. The DCA Indication price for both floury and firm potatoes remains the same as last week at €33 to €38 per 100 kilos, but with the remark that there is little trade.
