Optimize with fewer resources and more precision

8 February 2023

Reduce costs in times of inflation. It sounds strange, but Jan Straver does this by being very precise with his crop protection.

"I think the best thing about agricultural business is the freedom you have. Of course you have to deal with regulations, you just have to try to deal with them as best as possible. For the rest I make the decisions myself, that's the freedom that yourself as an entrepreneur."

Sven from AgroExact in conversation with Jan Straver, who monitors the local humidity for his crop protection.

"In arable farming, you have to pay close attention to your costs. Fertilization, irrigation, crop protection – it all costs a lot of money. If you can save on those costs, then that is a good tool to increase the margin. That's how I pay attention very much on the circumstances under which I apply crop protection. Is the humidity high enough? Then I go for it. That makes a difference in my dosage." How does Straver monitor this? With the weather stations from the AgroExact measuring network.

Sander Dekker of CAV-Agrotheek explains how the system works.

Efficiency is not only possible by closely monitoring the circumstances yourself, the measurements of AgroExact's weather stations can also be linked to so-called BOS systems (Decision Supported Systems), says CAV Agrotheek advisor Sander Dekker. Not only do they themselves use the measurements to fine-tune their own advice, Dekker also sees that a link helps growers themselves on their way: "A BOS system indicates the disease pressure, the optimal moment of spraying and the period that the spraying still provides sufficient protection. This way you can ensure that a disease is suppressed preventively." The more local the measurements, the more precise these types of systems are with the desired effect.

Berit Herman van Alliance at Willie Houbraken's arable farming and contract spraying company.

Berit Herman of Alliance says: "We are increasingly seeing that the time of day and weather conditions are becoming important in crop protection. Fewer and fewer resources are available, often weather-dependent. Moreover, you are not allowed to spray when the wind is too strong - a weather station is actually a must."

Anyone can get started right away. "AgroExact has an interesting offer: you buy the data, as it were, not the expensive measurement setups. That simply saves costs, and AgroExact also ensures that the weather stations are properly maintained. You can always view the measurements from your region, because five weather stations are standard can be seen when you start using the app." View more information about the AgroExact solution here
