Nitrogen snatched from the air

20 March 2023

Did you know that the production of a ton of nitrogen costs almost as much energy as an average household uses on an annual basis? With the current energy crisis and the need to work in an increasingly environmentally conscious way, Vixeran is the ideal nitrogen substitute.

It is cost effective and easy to use. Depending on the fertilizer price and the nitrogen application per crop, €50 to €100 per hectare can be saved. In addition, it is also beneficial in terms of energy consumption and the environment (less leaching).

The unique bacterial strain Azotobacter salinestris CECT 9690 is able to bind nitrogen from the (soil) air and thus provide crops with extra nitrogen. An average of 30 to 40 kg N (110 to 150 kg KAS) can be saved per hectare, with a constant yield.

And you are also working sustainably:

  • Less nitrogen leaching.
  • A lower CO2 footprint of your crop, because less energy is required for its production due to the savings on artificial fertilizer.

If the (legal) options for N-gift are too tight for optimal growth, the use of VIXERAN® still generate additional revenue.

How does this work?
Vixeran binds nitrogen gas (N2) from the air (both from the atmosphere and air in the soil) and converts it into nitrogen that can be absorbed by the plant. This can be compared to leguminous crops that fix nitrogen.

The uptake of nitrogen takes place in three places in the plant: leaves, roots and rhizosphere (formation of a biofilm around the roots). After application, the bacteria colonizes (multiplies) already from 8 °C. The N-fixation starts from application and as colonization increases, the crop is supplied with extra usable nitrogen.

Helpful hints for the application:

  • Always use Vixeran early in the crop. Given the frost resistance, this is also possible. An application in the autumn is therefore also possible. A temperature of 12 °C for a few hours on the day of application or a soil temperature of 10 °C promotes absorption and faster colonization.
  • Do not spray until there is a crop on the field. So not on bare soil, because then only soil action is obtained and no uptake takes place via the leaf.
  • If you want to save on the fertilizer application, do not do this on the first application very early in the season. But on the second or third dose, because only then will the crop receive the most nitrogen from the Vixeran application.
  • In hot and very sunny weather (heat, high UV radiation in summer) it is recommended to carry out an application early or late in the day. A high evaporation rate of the spray liquid or closed stomata and high UV radiation have an adverse effect on the absorption of the Azotobacter in the crop.
  • Apply Vixeran with a normal spray volume of 200-300 l of water per hectare. Its use does not require any extra work, because Vixeran can be sprayed in combination with most common plant protection products.
  • Vixeran is a powder, the bacteria become active as soon as they come into contact with water. First make a pre-dilution of the required amount (dosage 50 grams/ha) (for example, dissolve it in a few liters of water in a bucket) and then pour this solution into the spray tank while the agitator is on.
