Few fireworks can be seen at the organic markets. The onions seem to follow the mainstream market only to a limited extent. Sales of potatoes are still unchanged.
There may not be a storm on the organic onion market, but the mood is certainly positive. Volumes continue to leave and sometimes business is done for smaller parties with a destination outside the Dutch borders. But if you look purely at the price movement, you would say that something different is going on in the market.
Limited price drop
So far, the organic onion market has mainly benefited from the conventional market this season when it comes to price. The organic product could not lag behind and managed to hitch a ride outside the fixed agreements. However, the organic market now appears to be partly following the conventional market downwards. The prices of almost €1 per kilo on the farm are a thing of the past and are not realistic at the moment. But because organic is a smaller market, there are fixed agreements and sales continue, the price drop is certainly a lot less compared to conventional. In addition, the stocks are not very large, partly because some of them have been sold in the usual circuit. The DCA Indicative Price drops by €3 to €82 per 100 kilos for both fine and coarse size grading.
Organic potato market
The organic potato market is unchanged compared to the past period. Sales are quiet and there is simply too much product, which was already clear at the start of the season. There must be demand from abroad, but so far this has only involved limited volumes. The advantage is that common table potatoes are also quite expensive, which is why organic lots are also sold there. Depending on the variety, prices may differ by a few euros. The quality of the growers' stocks is generally good. The DCA Indicative Price remains the same and amounts to €33 to €39 per 100 kilos.
