No recovery on the carrot market

7 April 2023 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 1 reaction

There is no shortage of theories and expectations about how the carrot market will continue. Several players on the market are convinced that they are right. Not bad in itself, but if buyers and sellers have very different ideas and don't want to move much towards each other, it certainly doesn't get any busier in the trade.

The weeks before Easter should be busy for flushers. That is not the case at all now, or as one rinser says: "The work we have scheduled actually fits more in the second half of January." This is mainly because Eastern European buyers are largely ignoring it. The Dutch carrot is too expensive, they say. This means that the flushers are very careful when purchasing extra and if they do something, it must be done sharply. The price should actually drop a little further to give exports a boost, some flushers think. Growers understandably see this very differently. There are no longer many good and free carrots in storage, so if a trader or dealer wants to buy, he will have to dig deep into his pockets. There is certainly something to be said for the large carrot.

little movement
The DCA Quotes for carrots show no shifts. B-carrot is priced at €52 to €66 per 100 kilos. That's the same as last week. C-carrot works out at €60 to €70 per 100 kilos. The trend this week is that very little trading is taking place. For regular work for supermarkets, for example, most washers have their stock in good order. Demand for the export channel is not such that processors really have to go to the farm to meet orders.
