Sales on the organic markets are continuing at a steady pace. The storage season for the onions is almost over, but there is still enough volume to sell for the table potatoes.
A spectacular end to the storage season seems far away at the organic onion and potato markets. There is hardly any free trade and the supply of organic potatoes is still ample. Processors have hedged on fixed agreements and because demand is lagging, there is little room for free trade. Trade in the onion market is also almost over, in addition to the fact that the free onion market is already a very small market.
Onion market drops slightly
New supply of onions from Egypt, among others, is of good quality and also ensures that fewer home-grown onions are needed. But that is no different compared to other years. There is currently no additional demand from home or abroad. Because the volume that is processed was already contracted, this results in little trade and transactions. Based on very few transactions, the DCA Indication Price takes a small step down and amounts to €68 per 100 kilos for both coarse and fine size grading.
The organic potato market is not much different in terms of free trade. Little happens and part of the sales disappears into the usual circuit. The price hardly differs between conventional and organic for certain varieties. The question is different, it works better with conventional than with organic. The current delay in the growing season is also not immediately reflected in the prices. It is clear that the organic table potato area is shrinking and you would expect that this, together with the current growth lag, would provide a small plus. The lack of demand remains the leading factor. The DCA Indicative Price of organic potatoes remains the same as last week and the spread is wide. This brings the quotation to €33 to €40 per 100 kilos.
