The stiffness is gone on the organic potato market. The demand for table potatoes is increasing and there seems to be a suitable place for every batch. However, the price does not jump like the demand does. The trade in organic onions from the 2022 harvest is almost complete.
The harvest of new, early organic potatoes will soon start slowly but surely, but seems to be a little later than in other years given the weather conditions. Rain or shine, it doesn't matter for the trade because it is no longer as slow as it was earlier this year. Now that the end of the storage season is in sight, supplies from abroad are disappointing and the 2023 harvest is taking a little longer, it is becoming clear that potatoes will still be needed in the near future. The run on chip potatoes that is currently underway is also providing a small boost, although the table potato market is very different from that of fries.
Offer remains ample
Depending on the properties such as variety and quality, a destination is found and this works for almost every batch, even for batches of lower quality, according to a trader. There is also still some volume disappearing in the conventional circuit. This means that the supply and demand ratio looks very different from the entire storage season. There is no shortage of scarcity, which we faced this season with organic carrots, for example. There are still stocks and the supply is wide. For the coming season, the area has taken a step back given the market developments. The DCA Indication Price for organic table potatoes increases by €1 and amounts to €34 to €42 per 100 kilos. The distribution is wide and mainly depends on the varieties.
Organic onions
The trade in organic onions is as good as over. These are the last batches to be processed in the near future and these have often already been recorded. In addition, quality plays a role and is deteriorating rapidly. Together with the import of foreign organic onions, processors have sufficient working stock for the coming period. It is difficult to arrive at an indicative price based on very few transactions. The DCA Indication Price remains the same and this week amounts to €68 per 100 kilos for both coarse and fine size grading. Because the end of the storage season is approaching and the trade is almost over, this will also be the last indicative price for organic onions.
