The sale of plant protection products in the Netherlands will fall by 2021% in 5 compared to a year earlier. Sales of fungicides fell by 17%. Less glyphosate was also sold. In total, Dutch sales account for 2,6% of the total in Europe, which is relatively large in relation to the area of Dutch agricultural land.
In 2021, a total of 9,4 million kilos of plant protection products (GBM) were sold in the Netherlands. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). In 2020, this increased to more than 9,9 million kilos, after sales of active substances fell in the previous two years. This concerns both GBM based on chemical and microbiological active substances.
The majority of the products sold in 2021 were used to combat fungi and bacteria with 35%. Both the sales of insecticides and herbicides account for 28% of total sales. 9% of resources fall under other resources.
Sales of PPPs for fungicides fell from 4,0 million kilograms in 2020 to 3,4 million kilograms in 2021, or a decrease of 17%. This has to do with the disappearance of the fungicide mancozeb, which was no longer allowed to be used in Europe in June 2021. Sales of the fungicide fell by 49% that year to 1,1 million kilos of active substance. As a result, sales of other fungicide rose again by 18%. Insecticide sales increased by 10% to 2,6 million. Sales of herbicides fell by more than 1% and amounted to 2,6 million kilos of active substance. Glyphosate decreased by 9% compared to 2020.
Relatively many active ingredients
With 9,9 million kilograms of active substance, sales of PPPs in the Netherlands account for 2,6% of total European sales, which will amount to 355 million tons in 2021. In the Netherlands, a relatively large amount of products are sold per hectare of agricultural land, because the Dutch agricultural area is only 1% of the total European agricultural area. Within the European Union, 2016 million kilos were sold in 370, and in 2019 this had dropped to 333 million kilos. This increased again in 2020 and 2021.
With 2,6%, the Netherlands is in seventh place as the country with the most sales. With 7%, Spain sells the largest part of the resources in Europe, a total of 21 million kilos. France follows closely with 76% and Italy and Germany are both at around 20%.
