Tackling leaf diseases in sugar beets

June 12, 2023

Foliar diseases are a significant threat to sugar beet yields. The health of the leaves is essential for the plant's photosynthesis and sugar production.

The most common foliar diseases in sugar beets include cercospora, ramularia, powdery mildew and rust. In addition to direct damage to the yield, severe infestations can also have indirect consequences, such as increased susceptibility to other diseases and pests.

cercospora

To maximize the yield of sugar beet, it is very important to prevent foliar diseases. Regular inspection of the crops and taking preventive measures, such as the use of resistant varieties and the application of plant protection products, can reduce the risk of foliar diseases. In addition, it is important to ensure good soil health and optimal growing conditions for the plants. By taking these measures, growers can limit the impact of foliar diseases and optimize sugar beet yields.

What can you do?

  • Monitoring in the field is important
  • Always prevent cercospora from establishing itself in the crop at the beginning of the season
  • Therefore, carry out a first preventive spraying in good time (often around the longest day). If the timing of the use of resources is not good, in other words, if spraying was done too late, we will see more damage to the plots later on
  • Use the advice of a warning system (BAS from the IRS)
  • Against all leaf diseases BICANTA® en TERN® a great solution

TERN is a new agent specially developed for the control of diseases in sugar beet cultivation. With its broad spectrum of activity, TERN provides effective control against various foliar diseases, including cercospora, powdery mildew and rust. It is also a 'booster' that enhances the effect of other substances when combined with them. This makes TERN particularly suitable for addition to BICANTA or Belanty*. By using TERN, sugar beet growers can reduce the impact of foliar diseases and improve health and yield.

Our advice:
In case of a warning message from the IRS:

  • Preferably spray BICANTA and add TERN if necessary
  • TERN can also be used in combination with Belanty

Dosage BICANTA: 1 l per ha

  • Two applications per crop
  • May be used in groundwater protection areas
  • Safety period is 35 days

Dosage TERN: 0,5 l per hectare

  • Two applications per crop with a minimum interval of 21 days
  • May be used in groundwater protection areas
  • Safety period is 28 days
