Aviko comes with a historically high pool price: 362 euros

4 July 2023 - Jesse Torringa - 23 comments

Aviko Potato presented its pool prices for the 4 harvest year on Tuesday 2022 July. The Potato Growers Commission (ATC) did only limited trading at the start of the storage season because it assumed that demand would exceed supply. This led to historically high pool prices.

The average pool price for the pool without presale is €362,70 per ton. The average pool price with presale is lower and amounts to €312,45 per tonne, Aviko reports. The price difference between the A, AA and AAA quality varieties is also increasing considerably. The expectation and sales strategy of the ATC paid off given the price development of the potato market last season. With this pool price, Aviko is well behind the average pool price of the 2018 drought year at €304,23.

Waiting paid off
Despite the high prices that started the 2021 season, the ATC has only done limited trading at the start of the storage season. They believed that the demand for potatoes would exceed the supply later this season. This expectation came true, because at the end of December the potato market rose to a higher price level. However, according to the ATC, there was more in the barrel than the level of around € 300 per ton. This also happened in recent months, as a result of which a relatively large part of the pool was sold without presale at considerably higher price levels.

The pool price without presale for the A-quality varieties with Fontane as the main variety amounts to €308,28 in week 45 to €446,53 in week 30. QSR-quality varieties with the main variety Innovator achieve the best payout price at €320,28in week 45 to €458,53 in week 30. In addition, there are 2 groups of varieties with AA quality and AAA quality.

Without presale

Week 30 €446,53 €449,86 €452,53 €458,53

Despite the fact that the presale pool adhered to the strategy whereby part was sold in advance, this pool also managed to benefit from the rising market. Fontane's presale pool is $268,53 in week 45 to $406,78 in week 30. Innovator is $280,53 in week 45 to $418,78 in week 30.

Do not believe that it is over with the seed potatoes either, but those trading houses will have to take a very good look in the mirror, because it seems to me now that it would not surprise me that next year another 6 percent or more of the acreage goes because the game is not played very fancy of course.

Strong price, but that is possible if you wait a long time and the market goes to € 500 plus.
Most Aviko growers will grow a whole part at a fixed price and put the rest in the pool, at most 50% for a big pool price and 30/40 tons per ha for €200.
Will you also come back to the Apf / Eriva price. I expect €300 on average to be the upper end for 90% of growers this year.

Aviko scores well not only last season, but also in other years. Put this in a row for a number of years and you will come to the conclusion that trading houses such as an eriva / apf actually no longer have a right to exist

Yes, it is ridiculous what fontane seed potatoes have stuck with the poterboer. There seems to be a new policy where the price is reviewed every year. And guess what, on the first day of the season they passed all the poters off to the big boys for, yup, a tip. Which free poter farmer now sells his stuff that still has to grow when nothing is in the ground yet. This is really stupid. And nobody yells

If you appoint drivers who are careful, this is what you get.
All seed potatoes sold for years to the processors for an apple and an egg.

it will take another 4 years (are 5 year contracts) before the seed potato compensation for the seed potato growers increases.

I think that the processors will raise the seed potato price considerably next year, I am taking into account 70 to 80 euros per ton for fontane and innovative

What a special maneuver by Aviko, it seems that they are trying to prop up their difficult purchasing position in the market with a super payout pool price.
Signboard of positive promotion. meanwhile there is a difference of 13 ct between November and June delivery.
Remember years ago, by aviko after mid-May no more market and price through the well.
Next year Aviko will be able to stunt again with their pool price because the growers en masse have signed the fixed price contract.

And there is actually no such thing as a drop in demand, eating pasta 1 or 2 times a week quickly comes out of the nose for most people.

If something is good, it can also be said (here) there have also been years that they have pissed next to the potty.

This year will also be very challenging as to what the best sales strategy is or will be, perhaps the top has already been.

What I am curious about is what has actually been sold for a fixed price, the numbers vary quite a bit, not only for the past harvest but also for this harvest.

No, that was misinterpreted. Has been fine with Aviko for years. Everyone has their own choice for their sales strategy and customer. Just found it remarkable that mood swing.
