Sowing time is autumn herbicide Herold time

20 September 2023

We see the weed pressure in winter wheat and winter barley increasing every year. This is partly due to the mild winters of recent years, but also to cultivation measures such as non-inversion tillage (NKG).

In certain growing areas we also see an increasing problem with resistant blackweed and windweed. Getting through the winter clean gives the crop a problem-free start. That is why the use of an autumn herbicide provides more certainty for good weed control. This also provides extra space and peace in the spring!

Herald is an autumn herbicide, a combination of the two active substances, namely diflufenican and flufenacet. Herold combats problem weeds very effectively. The product is strong against grasses such as blackgrass, meadow grass and meadow grass. It also has a good effect on broadleaf weeds such as speedwell, purple dead-nettle and small groundsel.

The use of Herold guarantees effective resistance management. It prevents the unnoticed 'selection out' of ALS* or ACC-ase** resistant weeds.

Trial weed control in winter wheat Platform Lelystad 2023
A test was set up on the Bayer Crop Science demo platform in winter wheat in which various weeds had been sown. The wheat and weeds were sown on October 19 and 20, 2022, respectively. Shortly afterwards, the autumn herbicide Herold was applied.

Below is an impression of this application compared to untreated.

Left: untreated with high dust pressure. Right: field where winter wheat was applied at 0,6 Herold/ha before emergence, which showed effective control.
Left: untreated with lots of annual meadow grass. Right: the field where 0,6 Herold / ha was applied shortly after sowing the winter wheat.
Left: untreated with perennial ryegrass. Right: the field where 0,6 Herold / ha was applied shortly after sowing the winter wheat.
Left: untreated with lots of chamomile. Right: the field where 0,6 Herold / ha was applied shortly after sowing the winter wheat.

Winter wheat advice

  • On clay soils with a siltability of > 20%: for the best results, apply Herold immediately after sowing. Take full advantage of the moisture present in the freshly prepared soil. With the certainty that the application has been carried out! Dosage 0,6L/ha.
  • On light (clay) soils with siltability of < 20% and loess soils: Apply Herold in the post-emergence stage, 'point stage', when the wheat has just emerged. Dosage 0,6 l / ha.

Winter barley advice

  • In this cultivation, Herold can be applied from emergence in the 1-2 leaf stage. Dosage 0,6 l/ha

Comments

  • Herold may also be used in groundwater protection areas.
  • Herold is also permitted in the following winter grains: winter rye, triticale and spelt. Here, the application before emergence is preferred.
  • In a normal crop rotation there are no restrictions regarding subsequent cultivation. However, it is not recommended to grow tulips after using Herold in winter grains prior to cultivation.
