Supply and demand limited on the organic carrot market

1 November 2023 - Jesse Torringa

Organic onion growers have confidence in the long term, but for the time being prices remain slightly under pressure. Due to the wet weather, little is happening in the field for carrots, but the same applies to demand, which remains limited.

The organic onion market is fairly quiet at the moment. Sales continue, but little exciting happens. That's not surprising considering the time of year we are in now. There is currently no lack of confidence in price development among both growers and sorters, but sales must continue to maintain the current price level, insiders indicate.

In terms of yield in tons, approximately the same volume of onions must be processed this season as last season. While relatively many organic onions were sold in the conventional channel last season due to the sharply increased prices. At a certain point, the organic onion market could barely keep up with the rapid price increases.

Given the current price difference between conventional and organic, nothing will disappear into the conventional channel in the near future. This requires greater organic sales than last year. Insiders indicate that it is still too early to say anything about the long term, but the price during the field period was on the high side and this is now also reflected in the price trend; that has been under some pressure since the harvest.

Growers are generally in a strong position and want a higher price than that currently offered for their lots. Concerns about quality persist, but this does not lead to much additional supply. The DCA Indication Price for organic onions remains the same at €44 to €50 per 100 kilos. The finer size sorting is at the bottom and the coarser size sorting costs around €50.

Organic potato market
The mood on the organic potato market remains unchanged compared to a week ago. The off-farm period has put some pressure on prices and caused them to drop in the past period, but that room was also there because prices started very high this season. In terms of harvest, the majority of table potatoes behind the shelves appear to be in contrast to conventional potato cultivation, but making an estimate is difficult. The DCA Indication Price for organic table potatoes decreases slightly and amounts to €42 to €48 per 53 kilos in week 100.

Organic carrot market
The organic carrot market is very quiet due to the disappointing, wet weather and concerns about quality are already starting to increase. Point rot is found every now and then. There is still a relatively large amount of early carrot because persistent rainfall simply did not make it possible to go onto the land. On the other hand, there are also few signals that demand will soon increase. People thought about this very differently earlier this season.

The hectare yields of organic carrots are also expected to be somewhat lower than average. The general picture is that the carrot is shorter in length this year. The DCA Indication Price for organic carrots this week amounts to an average of €25 per 100 kilos.
