Rain slowly trickles into the carrot market

3 November 2023 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The weather is also the talk of the day at the carrot market. Unlike potatoes, the harvesting of storage carrots has only just begun. And if the weather reports come true, it will take some time before any success can be achieved.

Opinions are fairly unanimous about what percentage of the storage carrot is still in the ground. Namely about 85% to 90%. It was already wet and the precipitation that fell over the past 24 hours certainly didn't help matters. Up to approximately 35 millimeters of water has fallen across the entire western half of the Netherlands. In the southwest and North Holland, the carrot stands in places with its feet in the water. It is also wet in the Flevopolders, but the problems with flooding seem to be slightly less serious there.

Many opportunities for harvesting have not yet arisen and growers are inclined to harvest whenever possible. That is also very understandable in an autumn like this. It just doesn't improve the quality of the carrot. If the carrot is rinsed immediately, you can get away with it, but putting carrots that have been soaked in the box between showers and put them in storage will quickly go wrong, according to rinsers.

Differences in vision
Among growers, the weather and the fact that there is little or no harvesting is still causing a bit of a stir. Flushers see the same weather, but they look at it differently. Growers say that there is little supply because there is no harvest and the price can or should therefore increase. Washers often still have sufficient work stock and exports are quiet. That is why they are not very eager to buy. Washers and traders are careful when purchasing for safekeeping. You don't know enough about what exactly you are ingesting. The DCA quotation for b-carrot remains the same as last week at €14 to €16 per 100 kilos. C-carrot has taken a step up and is now equal to the b-carrot at €14 to €16 per 100 kilos.
