Organic markets remain in balance

8 November 2023 - Jesse Torringa

It is quiet on the organic markets. This is mainly due to the persistent rainfall that delays the harvest. Especially with carrots, where hardly anything is harvested. But there is also little to do in terms of sales.

The organic onion market follows the same trend as in recent weeks. Sales continue quietly, but demand remains limited. According to insiders, this will continue for a while. Growers are now reasonably in the saddle, but concerns about quality remain in some cases. On average, the batches are of slightly lower quality than in other years and this also requires extra attention when it comes to storage and drying.

Prices remain under some pressure. However, this will not lead to a change in the indicative price. There is little trade and growers work together to keep the price going. The DCA Indication Price for organic onions remains the same and amounts to €44 to €50 per 100 kilos. The finer size grading is at the bottom of that spectrum and the coarser size grading costs around €50.

Hardly any carrots harvested
The organic carrot harvest is going smoothly, or rather not at all. The weather has been putting the harvesting machines at a standstill for a long time, so little is happening. It is difficult to say exactly how much has been cleared. Many plots have not yet or hardly been touched. On the other hand, the demand for organic carrots is also somewhat disappointing, while supplies are very limited. The DCA Indication Price for organic carrots this week amounts to an average of €23 to €26 per 100 kilos.

It's a different story on the organic potato market. That market seems to be going reasonably well and interest in exports remains strong in the long term. The trend of recent weeks continues. Growers said goodbye to lots more easily than in other years with the harvest because of the good prices, says an insider. Unlike the carrots, there are not many potatoes left in the ground on the entire organic area, but here too little has been done in the past week. The DCA Indication Price for organic table potatoes will decrease slightly this week and will amount to €42 to €48 per 53 kilos in week 100.
