Sales of organic onions have been quite slow so far, but growers are also in no hurry to sell. Not even in the long term. The organic carrot market is picking up somewhat due to concerns in the country about persistent rainfall, although sales there are not booming either.
The demand for organic onions is calm at the moment and this is not expected to change in the short term, according to insiders. Growers, in turn, have no reason to open the box with onions and do have confidence in long-term price developments. The lower hectare yields and lower quality are the reason for this, but this lower quality must be eliminated in the long term. In addition, the current price they can get for their product is in many cases lower than the farm gate price and growers are not satisfied with that.
The DCA Indication Price for organic onions remains the same in week 46, but the spread is very wide. That depends on the quality and size selection. The quotation is €44 to €50 per 100 kilos. The finer parts are at the bottom of that spectrum and the coarser parts are charged around €50.
The organic carrot market is mainly governed by the persistent wet weather. Harvests are only taking place at a slow pace and concerns about quality are increasing among growers due to the wet conditions. Although not all early carrots have been harvested yet, there is also the question of what should be done with the storage carrots that will be harvested under these circumstances or in the near future. Storing this is a risk and may not be suitable for longer storage. Immediate closure is obvious, but the demand must be there. The minimum ability to grub does influence the DCA Indication Price. The DCA Indication Price for organic carrots increases this week and amounts to an average of €25 to €29 per 100 kilos.
Sales prospects for the organic potato market remain positive. Growers and the trade have confidence in the further development of the season, but the very good mood has diminished somewhat after a good start to the season. Just as with carrots, some harvesting still needs to be done, but only a fraction of the total area. The DCA Indication Price for organic table potatoes will decrease slightly this week and will amount to €42 to €45 per 52 kilos in week 100.
