These have been quiet weeks in terms of sales of organic table potatoes and onions. However, that says nothing about the market prospects for the remainder of the storage season, in which there is a lot of confidence. Sales of organic potatoes will certainly increase sooner or later. Peen adds a big plus this week.
The mood on the organic table potato market is good, despite the fact that current sales are not very spectacular. The lots with a story have been cleaned up and what is now in storage looks reasonably good, says an insider. However, there are fewer kilos in this storage and this does not only apply in the Netherlands. This should sooner or later give exports a significant boost during the storage season. German buyers entered the market early and purchases were also made directly from the grower. Growers are aiming high and currently have no desire to sell. The DCA Indication Price for table potatoes rises at the top and amounts to €50 to €68 per 100 kilos. The range is wide and this is due to the differences in variety, quality of the batch and the sales market.
Carrot price is increasing
The organic carrot harvest is still going on, as it turned out last week, thanks to the drier conditions. The finish seems to be in sight, although some carrots were lost during the harvest. The supply from land is limited and is also easily found. Demand has been reasonably good for several weeks, partly due to exports. This is expected to continue after New Year's Eve. Growers also have confidence that the storage season will run smoothly, although it remains to be seen how the carrot will develop in storage in the coming weeks. That remains a concern.
The DCA Indication Price for organic carrots is increasing and amounts to €34 to €39 per 100 kilos. This is partly because in the short term there will be a switch to carrots from storage and you simply have to pay more for this. However, there is very little carrot that leaves storage.
There is little change at the organic onion market compared to previous weeks. Growers are firmly in the saddle and want a price that does not yet fully match what can be given by the buyer. The supply from storage also continues to flow reasonably well and is finding its way into sales. The DCA indicative price remains the same and amounts to €47 to €55 per 100 kilos, with the comment that few transactions are made.
