Organic carrot market has wind at its back

3 January 2024 - Jesse Torringa

The organic carrot has been in storage for a while and it is time to take stock in terms of quality. This is not disappointing so far and the market is once again taking an upward step. The yellow onion market is also starting to pick up. Free red onions are hardly available anymore.

Now that many organic carrots have been in storage for a while, it is becoming increasingly clear how the quality is developing. At first glance this is not disappointing, given the harsh, wet conditions under which the harvesting took place and the large amount of soil in the boxes. Some point rot has been observed here and there and not all batches appear to be suitable for long-term storage, but it is not disappointing, reports an insider.

In the meantime, carrot sales are continuing reasonably well, regardless of the holidays and holidays of recent weeks. This applies to our own country but also abroad, such as Germany, which remains in the market for carrots from Dutch soil. Here too, not everything has been cleared, there have been losses with the harvest and the quality is sometimes disappointing. This provides more confidence in the course of the carrot season, both in the short and long term.

The DCA Indication Price takes another step upwards this week and amounts to €40 to €45 per 100 kilos. Long-term trade is also done and these prices start at €50 per 100 kilos.

Free red onions hardly available
The organic onion market is starting to pick up somewhat, but sales are not yet particularly good. It is mainly the lower yields in the Netherlands and several other European countries that make the mood good in the long term. The sales of organic yellow onions have many destinations. Last season, a certain volume of free onions was sold in the conventional channel due to the attractive, high prices at the time. This will not happen yet this year and it is not necessary, given the supply and demand ratio of yellow onions in the organic market, according to insiders. Free red onions are now hardly available anymore. This has to do with disappointing yields of red onions and the fact that both supply and demand are very limited. The transactions of free red onions are very limited and vary widely. That is why making an indicative price is very difficult. Moreover, the majority of organic red onion cultivation is under contract.

The DCA Indication Price for organic yellow onions remains the same and amounts to €47 to €55 per 100 kilos, with the fine size grading at the bottom and the coarse size grading at the top of this width.

Trade on the organic table potato market continues to be quiet. There is no shortage of interest from home and abroad and this should continue to increase in the coming months and lead to an increase in sales. Growers are in a reasonably good position and are also optimistic about the further development of the storage season. The DCA Indication Price for organic table potatoes remains the same this week at €50 to €68 per 100 kilos. The range is wide and that is due to the difference in breed, the quality of the batch and the sales market.
