Quality on the organic market is a point of attention

10 January 2024 - Jesse Torringa

Organic growers are not in a great hurry to sell table potatoes, onions and carrots from storage. It is the good faith in the market that largely ensures this. However, this is not possible with every batch, such as with organic carrots, in which the past wet harvest is showing signs and which sometimes now has to be said goodbye earlier.

There is a good mood on the organic market for potatoes, carrots and onions. Sales have continued reasonably well to date, especially of organic carrots. This is also reflected in the rising market prices. Organic carrots thus continue the trend from before New Year's Eve, with Germany as a major interested party and buyer.

Yet it is not all rosy. The quality of carrots has held up reasonably well in storage recently, but in some cases this will change, as growers and buyers see. Several black spots become visible on the carrot. As expected, the difficult, wet harvest has had an influence. It is too early to say that quality is deteriorating across the board, but there are concerns about some of the parties.

The continued good demand means that people have to buy on the farm and this leads to a further increase in market prices. However, the spread is large. This has to do with the transportation costs that differ and the degree of quality. Due to the wet harvest, the net weight of organic carrots in the box is lower than in other years and this leads to more transport. The DCA Indication Price has increased significantly this week by €5 and amounts to €40 to €50 per 100 kilos, delivered from the grower.

Quality is also a thing with onions
Sales on the organic onion market are quieter compared to carrots. Yet there are no complaints about the volumes that have decreased to date. In addition, the total supply is expected to remain limited this season due to the difficult growing season, resulting in lower yields. What is being commented on is the tare this season. This varies greatly, but is sometimes literally disappointing. Growers are fairly stuck in the competition. And although a lot has been contracted, it is not the case that sales are completely quiet. The DCA Indication Price for organic yellow onions increases slightly at the top and amounts to €47 to €57 per 100 kilos, with the fine size grading at the bottom and the coarse size grading at the top of this range.

The mood on the organic table potato market has not changed after New Year's Eve compared to earlier this storage season. There is no shortage of interest from domestically and from export destinations, which should lead to an increase in sales in the coming months. To date, the volume that has been deposited is not particularly high. However, more sales have been made than was the case last season, an insider indicates. The DCA Indication Price for organic table potatoes remains the same this week at €50 to €68 per 100 kilos. The range is wide and that is due to the difference in breed, the quality of the batch and the sales market.
