Tense manure market near tipping point

1 February 2024 - Jesse Torringa

Just before the start of the spreading season, the collection contributions for liquid manure have probably reached their peak. According to intermediaries and contractors, the pressure will soon finally be released from the overflowing boiler. The rainy weather that is expected could still act as a spoilsport in the coming period. Now that the market is at the top, arable farmers are busy recording liquid manure for next spring.

The manure pits are often full to the brim. Livestock farmers are counting down on the calendar until February 16 arrives. It is clear that the exit season is approaching. The oppressive supply is decreasing and minimal volumes of liquid manure are leaving the farm. It is also noticeable in the pricing of the collection contributions that the departure season is just around the corner.

DCA's fertilizer quotations remain largely stable this week. Intermediaries and contractors no longer expect further price increases. Pig slurry is collected for an average of €31 to €33 per cubic meter, in some cases higher or slightly lower. The collection contribution for cattle slurry is on average €30 per cubic meter.

Interest in liquid manure
Many agreements are currently being made with arable farmers about the supply of liquid manure next spring. There is great interest because of the amount of extra money they receive this season for liquid manure, compared to other years. Prices of over €20 per cubic meter or even more are the order of the day, although the amounts vary widely per region.

There is particular interest in cattle slurry. In addition, due to the phasing out of the derogation, more cattle slurry is also available. According to some intermediaries, this may result in a slightly larger difference in the selling price of cattle and pig slurry in the coming weeks.

Weather type can act as a spoilsport
The big question is how the sales prices of liquid manure will develop from the spreading period onwards. According to intermediaries, the pressure is on, but no one dares to say to what extent selling prices will fall. Simply because the weather remains a major influence. If rainy weather continues, sales prices may decline less quickly, regardless of the current high price level. The weather forecast for the next two weeks is anything but favorable for the spreading season. Many millimeters are again given up, making the drying weather of the past few days quickly forgotten.
