There is sometimes a difference between asking and receiving. That's part of the negotiation game. There is no difference between what some growers ask for carrots and what growers are willing to pay, but a gaping hole. Who is going to move towards whom?
The quality of the carrot returns almost every week and this week we cannot ignore it either. There are many comments to be made about a lot of carrots that are traded directly. That does not mean that the carrot is bad, but in general it is not the boxes of carrots that can be stored for a few more months. It is difficult to estimate which parties are and are not complying. Several buyers have already paid their tuition fees this season.
Voltage:
The offer from the lesser parties dampens the mood among flushers somewhat. Some growers continue to have a lot of confidence in the market and are already asking for record amounts. It is certainly not impossible that the boundaries will be pushed this season for carrots. What c-peen normally goes to cutters does not correspond to what is in the refrigerator. For b-peen, rinsers are less certain of record prices. Export plays a more important role there and there is a chance that customers will look further if the Netherlands becomes too expensive. The €500 per box that some growers are courageously asking for is far from being an issue this week.
The DCA quotation for both b- and c-peen remains stable this week. B-carrot stands at €37 to €43 per 100 kilos and c-carrot at €38 to €43. There is not much trade though. A large part of what is done falls outside the quality specifications and growers with decent carrots can still easily keep the door closed.
