28 February 2024 - Jesse Torringa

Sales of organic table potatoes, carrots and yellow onions continue at a reasonable pace for this time of year. The lower quality on the carrot market is putting some pressure on the average price, but things are looking better for good carrots.

The demand for organic table potatoes remains reasonably stable. It is not overly busy and there is also sufficient supply from the growers at the moment. The influence on the market of new harvest potatoes from Egypt, among others, is currently being examined. So far it is not putting pressure on prices.

Fresh harvest is popular, but national or - better said - product from European soil is preferred in certain cases. This is a characteristic that is gaining ground in the sale of table potatoes to consumers. Prices remain the same as last week and the moderate and very coarse lots amount to €52 to €60 per 100 kilos. Good batches of certain varieties average around €70 per 100 kilos.

Carrot
The wide spread in the prices of organic carrot lots is also clearly visible this week. The quality varies greatly and the price paid for inferior batches is considerably lower. Due to the supply of reasonable volumes of carrots, the quality of which does not exactly win the prize, the average price in this segment is under some pressure. Demand is also slightly calmer than was the case in recent months. The kilos of organic carrots are now quite 'tidy up' in storage.

The DCA Indicative Price remains the same as last week and amounts to €42 to €60 per 100 kilos, delivered from the grower. However, the average price is under some pressure due to the mediocre quality. For good games, the price is around €60.

Onions
Quality is also starting to play a greater role in the organic yellow onion market. It is not the case that the average quality is declining sharply, but the demand is mainly for the good batches. Growers often set too high prices for batches of slightly inferior quality. It should be mentioned that there are very few transactions with free yellow onions. What is currently being sold has already been determined in advance or later.

The DCA Indication Price for organic yellow onions remains the same this week and amounts to €68 to €86 per 100 kilos. The fine size sorting is at the bottom and the coarse size sorting is at the top of this bandwidth.
