Mediocre quality slows down the organic carrot market

6 March 2024 - Jesse Torringa

The mediocre quality of organic carrots and the large amount of land in the boxes are hampering the carrot market. Lower-quality carrots are widely available, putting some pressure on the market. Good carrots remain in demand and can take a step later this season. The demand for organic table potatoes and yellow onions remains reasonably stable.

Quality remains the topic of discussion in the organic carrot market. It is an exaggeration to say that mediocre quality is flooding the carrot market, but it does mean that mediocre carrots or those with minor defects are worth a lot less than good quality carrots. It is also not surprising given the extra work involved, for example with the amount of land. Some games are really not easy for flushers. In addition, demand is simply less than earlier this season. Distant export destinations are also more likely to fail due to quality.

The level of quality has been causing a wide spread in prices for organic carrots for several weeks now. The DCA Indicative Price remains the same as last week and amounts to €42 to €60 per 100 kilos, delivered from the grower. Not much has changed compared to a week earlier, but on average, slightly less is paid for parties with a (small) story. Good parties pay €60.

March has arrived
The organic onion market has continued to hold up well in the second half of the season. An insider indicates that demand for yellow onions has calmed down a bit at the moment, but that may well be a snapshot. Sorters and the trade notice that there is interest in Dutch products and that demand remains high. Quality is starting to play a role now that March has arrived and sometimes we have to say goodbye before the quality deteriorates too quickly. That does not lead to a large supply at the moment, however. The DCA Indicative Price for organic yellow onions is slightly higher this week and amounts to €68 to €83 per 100 kilos. The fine size sorting is at the bottom and the coarse size sorting is at the top of this bandwidth. It should be noted that this is based on very few transactions.

Little spectacle is not bad news
There has been little change in the organic table potato market in recent weeks. That will not change this week and that also applies to the transactions that are made. These remain at the same level. Just because there is little spectacle or change does not mean it is bad news. The volumes of table potatoes in storage have decreased further in recent weeks and the current price level is good. In addition, the question also remains reasonably intact. With all those ingredients, it is not a crazy idea that the table potato market can take another step in the long term, an insider explains. Prices remain the same as last week and the moderate and very coarse lots amount to €52 to €60 per 100 kilos. Good batches of certain varieties average around €70 per 100 kilos.
