There is no real movement in the carrot market. Export is difficult and quality is not good everywhere. What is increasing is the price range.
How good the carrot is makes a world of difference in the carrot trade. Lesser lots with black dots are almost sold for giveaway prices. €50 per box of field crop is nothing strange. On the other hand, growers ask €250 per box for b-carrots that are not too coarse and of excellent quality. Please note: ask. Flushers often do not want to pay more than €200 per box. This is generally a carrot suitable for retail. Customers have high quality standards but are also willing to pay a little more for it.
The fact that the export of old Dutch carrots is slowing down is due to the supply of new product from the Mediterranean region. So far it has mainly been Egypt that supplies the market with new carrots, but the harvest is now also getting underway in Spain. Once customers have switched to new products, you cannot get them back to old products, say several rinsers.
A realistic representation of the market is difficult to give due to the wide variation in prices and quality. Assuming good carrots - not really top but certainly not on the edge of class 1 - the DCA Quotation for b- and c-carrots remains the same as last week at €32 to €38 per 100 kilos.
Read here is the explanation from DCA Market Intelligence on the new quotations.
