Trade on organic markets is drying up further

8 May 2024 - Jesse Torringa

Trade continues to decline on the organic markets for table potatoes and onions. That is not necessarily a bad sign, because stocks have shrunk considerably and many parties already have a boss, especially with onions. The export of new harvests is only competitive to a limited extent.

Trade may decline somewhat, but the demand for organic table potatoes and onions is certainly not slow for this time of year. In addition, quite a bit has been sold this season and the grower's stocks have shrunk sharply. With yellow onions, most of what is left already has an owner, or the sorter is already familiar with the volume that will come from a grower. The yellow onions don't last very long either, because according to a sorter the quality is simply lower this year and that has been clearly reflected in recent weeks.

The quality of yellow onions sometimes deteriorates rapidly and this currently means that batches have to be removed earlier or faster than expected, whether they have already been committed or not. Despite the stable, reasonable demand on the organic market for this time of year, it is not possible to process everything so quickly. Some growers have waited a bit too long to sell the onions, a sorter indicates. As a result, there is now a rush involved. A place with lower quality will not immediately be found.

Due to a small number of transactions, it is difficult to arrive at an indicative price. The DCA Indication Price for organic yellow onions will decrease slightly this week and amounts to €72 to €85 per 100 kilos. The fine size selection and lower quality are at the bottom of the range. The rough size sorting is at the top of the mentioned bandwidth.

Table potato market
At the table potato market, regular work continues, but it is not noticeably busy. For the time being, there are no gaps for additional sales and this is probably due to the new harvest of organic table potatoes around the Mediterranean. It remains a guess what volume comes from there, because given the current circumstances in Israel, it may be somewhat less than in other years. The current, late growing season of 2024 also creates a better mood on the market because the growing season is later, but this is not yet paying off in the market.

The DCA indicative price for organic table potatoes remains the same again this week and averages around €66 per 100 kilos. Lower quality lots sell for an average of €60 per 100 kilos and popular varieties of very good quality start with a 7 as the first number.
