15 May 2024 - Jesse Torringa

The stocks of organic table potatoes in the Netherlands have thinned out considerably in recent months. The sales opportunities were wide and sales continued smoothly. The growers were also able to sell their lots at relatively good prices, making it easier to say goodbye than with lower prices. "Certainly compared to the pricing of recent years, a nice balance could be achieved," says an insider.

With the not exceptional yields from the 2023 harvest and the smooth sales in the market, it appears that stocks have now shrunk considerably. That is not surprising given the time of year and recent pricing, but there is still some time to cover. New harvest import potatoes can always change the market and that often happens, but according to an insider the volumes are lower than in other years. The supply of new harvest from Israel is estimated to be lower, which is probably due to political tensions. Egypt also offers a lot to the European market with relatively competitive prices, but European countries such as Germany are also actively looking for new supply.

The DCA indicative price for organic table potatoes increased slightly this week and averaged around €68 per 100 kilos. Lower quality lots sell for an average of around €62 per 100 kilos and popular varieties of very good quality are sold for as much as €74 to €75 per 100 kilos.

Quality remains the topic of discussion
On average, an onion sorter has no complaints about the amount of work for the time of year, according to an insider. On the other hand, there also seems to be sufficient stock to meet this requirement, although the majority of the onion lots have already been sold or at least it is known when they will be said goodbye. The offer has all different qualities: sometimes it is disappointing, other times there is nothing wrong with it. However, a party deteriorates rapidly as soon as the first flaws are shown.

It is difficult to arrive at an indicative price due to a limited number of transactions for organic yellow onions and their destination. The DCA Indication Price for organic yellow onions remains the same and amounts to €72 to €85 per 100 kilos. The fine size selection and lower quality are at the bottom of the range. The rough size sorting is at the top of the mentioned bandwidth.
