Costs for storage guidance are recouped three times over

June 13, 2024

"I read about Tolsma Alert in the newsletter and immediately decided to try it." These are the words of Theo Vos, arable farmer from Bant. "During the harvest period I am also busy processing the harvest and sorting for third parties. The extra support for storage comes in very handy."

Since last storage season, more and more growers have been using the services of Tolsma-Grisnich's new Customer Service department. This department was started to provide customers with advice as companies grow and need more guidance. In this new way it is possible to continue to provide storage advice in an efficient and proactive manner, including advice about institutions.

During the busy period from September to the end of November, Vos' company is busy harvesting and storing seed and consumption potatoes and onions. It is especially important for the onions that they are dried quickly. "At the same time, I am also busy cooling, drying and storing the 60 hectares of potatoes that I grow," says Theo. "This often means that I don't have enough time to keep a close eye on everything." And he adds: "This should not really be an option, because saving or losing a party can cost a lot of money."

"Our Tolsma Alert service is based on an online platform, where we can actually monitor all parameters," says Twan van Dun. "These are the temperatures, relative humidity, CO2 and, for example, the operating hours of ventilation and cooling. And when we see an abnormal measured value, we respond by telephone or send an e-mail. In the most important drying/wound healing phase of the storage, the guidance starts with a physical visit to see how the parties entered the storage. Only in this way can good online advice be provided during the storage season to monitor the crop in storage. During storage, the customer receives a weekly storage report with an overview of measured values and operating hours of the past week and advice for the climate computer settings." Twan says: "A customer recently said that he experiences this service as if an extra pair of eyes were looking over his shoulder."

At Tolsma Alert, the first focus of the advice is on increasing storage quality. This is done by adjusting the settings to the needs of the product and the weather conditions. Thanks to the experience of the team of storage specialists working in the Customer Service department, customers can quickly make gains in limiting unnecessary weight loss. In addition, there is also a clear focus on energy costs. In the practice of storage, these two points also apply naturally. Theo Vos explains: "At my company with 3.500 tons of storage capacity, a 0,5% reduction in weight loss quickly yields a lot of money. Delivering 18 to 20 tons of seed potatoes for an additional €0,40 means that the costs of Tolsma Alert are more than tripled. become." What Vos perhaps sees as a greater advantage is that his logistics operations are minimized. "My aim is to keep the seed potatoes in the field calm for as long as possible in order to coordinate processing and delivery as much as possible." Tolsma Alert's active guidance ensures that the product dries faster and reaches storage temperature. "This saves by far the most money, in my experience."

Theo Vos has now used the Tolsma Alert service for a year and will certainly continue to do so: "I really appreciate the support from Tolsma Alert. It helps me to stay more focused on storage and to understand the values I see in the climate computer. better understood and translated into practice". What Vos sees as an advantage 'is that the personal approach to the service is very valuable'. "That's actually the most important thing."
