Help your crop through weather changes

2 July 2024

We are currently experiencing quite summery conditions. Many crops have had more than enough water recently. When the weather suddenly changes, this can cause stress for the crops.

The roots will have to work harder to absorb moisture. In addition, the poor condition of various plots will make moisture supply more difficult in a drier period. Above the ground, the tender leaf will still have to put energy into forming a good wax layer to be better able to withstand drought and higher temperatures. In addition, in more summery conditions, the UV radiation will be higher, causing the blade to wear harder.

The stress caused by the circumstances falls under the heading of abiotic stress. In addition, a plant also has to deal with so-called plannable stress. These are crucial moments in a plant's life cycle when extra energy is needed for a specific purpose. This includes foliage growth, tuber formation, bulbing, flowering or ripening of a crop. Various products are available to make crops resistant to abiotic and/or planned stress.

Amino acids and seaweed extracts can play an important role in increasing the resilience of a crop to high levels of light and moisture deficiency. In addition, plant extracts can help a plant cope with planned stress.

Jan Pieter Almostgte explains in the video below what the different types of biostimulants are and how they support the plant in times of stress.
