Choose the best green manures for your crop plan

24 July 2024

green manures ensure the supply of organic matter, structural improvement, nutrition of soil life and retention of nutrients. The downside is that they can also propagate harmful nematodes. You can prevent this with the right green manures.

In the video Martijn van Overveld takes you through the possibilities:

Chitwoodi and beet cysts
In the (possible) presence of the corn root knot nematode (M. chitwoodi) and/or beet cysts, multi-resistant fodder radish Doublet the right choice. But be careful, fodder radish is a host plant for Pratylenchus penetrans.

Japanese oats and marigolds
For this root lesion nematode, choose Japanese oats or marigolds. Japanese oats is a grain-like green manure with a very high success rate that ensures a natural decline in pratylenchus penetrans. Choose maximum penetrant control tagetes patula: When sown early (mid-July to early August), this cultivation effectively kills this harmful nematode on light soils.

Dehydrating snails
In addition to nematodes, we see an increase in snail damage. The best way to combat snails is by dehydration. Work the land during dry summer periods so that the snails have no food and shelter. You can then sow a green manure that develops well when sown later, such as yellow mustard.

NKG and organic (nitrogen) matter
If harmful nematodes do not play a role in your choice, then focus on one of these cultivation goals: NKG cultivation, maximum organic matter or N supply. With NKG you want a green manure that covers the soil well and is sensitive to frost. Specially for this LG Greencover NKG compiled.

The mix LG Orgamax supplies the highest amount of effective organic matter, with a large proportion of sunflowers in it. If you want more nitrogen supply for your subsequent crop, then sow the mixture LG Nitrafix. A mixture with legumes that fix N from the air and leaf cabbage + turnip that fix a lot of N and release it again in the spring.
