News Harvest forecast CBS

Larger area produces more potatoes and onions

30 October 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 7 comments

The potato and onion harvest is much larger this year than last year. At least that is what Statistics Netherlands states in the provisional harvest estimate for arable farming. Incidentally, the larger harvests can be attributed largely to area expansion and not to exceptionally high yields.

Never before have so many onions been grown as in 2024. According to the CBS, the total area cultivated with seed onions amounts to 32.526 hectares. The estimated yield is 46,4 tonnes per hectare and the total harvest of seed onions amounts to 1,51 million tonnes. Of that, 1,31 million tonnes are yellow and the rest (200.000 tonnes) red. The yield of second-year plant onions was 49,2 tonnes per hectare and the total harvest is 308.301 tonnes in the preliminary harvest estimate of the CBS.

The area of consumption potatoes is hitting a record high at 77.908 hectares. The CBS estimates the yield at 46,2 tonnes per hectare and the total harvest is estimated at 3,6 million tonnes. That is 7% more than last season, but not all potatoes were harvested then due to the wet autumn, CBS notes.

Winter wheat harvest almost halved
The wheat harvest is 37% lower compared to last season. First of all, the cultivated area is noticeable. It is smaller than last season and for the first time since 1957, less than 100.000 hectares of winter wheat have been sown. After the wet autumn, it remained wet throughout the growing season. The yield of winter wheat was 7,3% lower than last season at 17 tonnes per hectare. The total harvest of winter wheat is 586.000% lower than in 45 at 2023 tonnes.

Beets were sown 6% more compared to last season and the total area is 85.000 hectares. The gross yield is 6,7 million tons, 3% lower compared to last season. The yield per hectare is on the meager side at 79 tons.

Have the hectares that were not planted this spring, but were reported in the combined declaration, been counted at CBS?

Stop with those CBS harvest estimates. It's all scaremongering. The first cells with a lot of rot are already being emptied. Some are being washed and others can no longer be saved and are going back onto the land. This mainly concerns the Agria, but other varieties are not entirely free of it either. Due to the high temperatures, there was very little to dry in recent times, which accelerated the rotting process. We have been trying to whistle CBS back the last few years. The farmer is always the victim of sending out incorrect figures. You don't get anything from hectares and kg per ha. It's about what is ultimately delivered net. This is not what CBS calculates with due to the extreme weather of recent years. In short, LTO should ensure that CBS stops reporting yield estimates.

they are just estimates so they could be wrong. I never participate in the yield measurements myself, work for nothing is not my thing, and I also do not understand why it is necessary to keep saying all that.

If I am invited again by the CBS to fill in the mandatory survey, I will simply fill in my estimated yield x50%. Let them go to hell there.

Don't participate in that survey on principle. Sending threatening letters you should either ignore completely or give a totally unbelievable answer. Let that thing burst. The more opaque the market figures the better.
is very stupid 4 November 2024
You should enter a yield of around 20 tons per hectare, you understand what problem you create by entering too much information and you are being thwarted twice!!!
